Privacy
Short version: the tools run in your browser, and what you type into them never leaves your device. The writing sprint saves your draft and log on this device only, and one button deletes them.
What the tools do with your data
Nothing leaves your browser. Every tool on this site is JavaScript running locally on your device. There is no server-side computation, no API call and no database. What you type is not transmitted and not logged.
You can verify this: open your browser's developer tools, go to the network tab, and use any tool. No request is made.
What the writing sprint keeps on your device
One tool stores data, and only in your own browser. The writing sprint timer saves these in your browser's local storage, so that a reload, a closed tab or a crash does not lose your writing:
- your draft text, saved about once a second while you type;
- the sprint in progress (when it started, its length, target and starting word count);
- your sprint log: for each finished sprint, its date and time, minutes, words added and words per minute;
- your sprint settings (length, target, and the display options you chose).
Local storage is part of your browser on this device. It is never sent to this site's server or anyone else, it is not a cookie, and other websites cannot read it. It stays until you delete it: the sprint page has a Delete all local data button that removes all of it at once, and clearing your browser's site data for askworm.com does the same. Anyone who uses your browser profile can see the draft, as with any document left open on a shared computer.
When you use Open in word counter, the draft is handed to the word counter page through the same local storage and removed as soon as that page has read it.
Server logs
The site is served from a web server that keeps standard access logs: the page requested, the time, your IP address, and your browser's user agent string. That is the ordinary minimum any web server records in order to function and to be debugged. These logs are not linked to anything you enter into a tool, because that data never reaches the server in the first place.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are useful. It is configured with IP anonymisation on and Google advertising signals off, so it is not used to build an advertising profile of you. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser; you can block them with any standard content blocker or your browser's own settings without affecting any tool on this site.
Advertising
This site carries advertising through Google AdSense, which is how it stays free. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, including ads based on your prior visits to this or other sites.
You can control this directly with Google at Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices. Ad blockers do not break anything on this site.
Advertising is confined to clearly marked slots and never runs inside or between the fields of a tool.
Affiliate links
Where a link to a retailer is an affiliate link, it is labelled as one at the point of the link. An affiliate link may earn a commission if you buy something, at no extra cost to you. No recommendation on this site is influenced by whether a link pays.
Cookies this site sets
None. The site itself sets no cookies. Its only use of local storage is the writing sprint's draft, log and settings described above. Any cookies present in your browser on these pages come from the third parties named above.
Children
This site is a set of general-purpose tools and is not directed at children under 13, and no personal information is knowingly collected from them.
Changes
This page describes the site as currently built and is regenerated with every deploy, so it reflects what is actually running rather than what was intended at some point in the past.
